ROUND THE WORLD ADVENTURE

on
2nd January 2018

About 18 months ago, we talked about taking a year out to travel the world, initially it was fanciful, we had jobs and a house, we had bills and a car, we had family and friends nearby. Whilst we’d love to see the world – it seemed more of a dream than a reality. At first it was a maybe when we retire; but we didn’t want to wait until we retire. Firstly we don’t know whether we’ll get that far in life, and secondly, we want to do it now whilst we are relatively of able body and mind. So we started looking at exactly what was stopping us, and what we’d have to do in order to make it a reality and bit by bit ideas become plans, and eighteen months became, well, tomorrow!

So, it is now 18 months later, and we are setting of on our adventure tomorrow, leaving the UK for one full year, with a rough itinerary of:

  • 3rd January, 2018: Delhi, India
  • 4th February, 2018: Hong Kong, China
  • 7th February, 2018: Vietnam
  • 26th February, 2018: Cambodia
  • 12th March, 2018: Laos
  • 2nd April, 2018: Thailand
  • 27th April, 2018: St Petersburg, Russia (Trans-Mongolian train to China…!)

  • 1st July, 2018: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
  • 15th July, 2018: Bali, Indonesia
  • 5th August, 2018: Sydney, Australia
  • 28th August, 2018: Christchurch, New Zealand
  • 10th September, 2018: Sydney, Australia
  • 15th September, 2018: Honolulu, Hawaii, USA
  • 22nd September, 2018: LA to New York (over one month, USA Road trip!)
  • 22nd October, 2018: Santiago, Chile
  • 2nd November, 2018: Peru (Machu Picchu here we come!)
  • 22nd November, 2018: Bogota, Colombia
  • 15th December, 2018: Sao Paulo/Rio, Brazil (Christmas and New Year fun!)
  • 2nd January, 2018: London, UK (and then on to Chester, our home)

For a rough itinerary it may look like we are pretty organised already, but what actually happened is in order to get our Round The World (RTW) air tickets, we had to commit to the destinations we wanted to go to (which was quite an involved exercise in itself, which we’ll dedicate another post to). And whilst we have flexibility to change all the dates, we have at least locked down the main airports we are flying to and on top of that, various parts of the trip we have had to commit to (for instance the Trans-Mongolian train from St Petersburg to Beijing or our tour of Tibet). So our schedule has a few corner stone places we have to be at specific times and the rest is up in the air (we have been given tonnes of ideas from family and friends for so many places – and are happy to hear about more in comments or via social media)!
